Italcementi Group Chief Executive Officer Carlo Pesenti met Libya’s Minister of Industry, Ali Yusuf Zikri, in Tripoli today. During his conversation with the Minister, Mr Pesenti illustrated the new investment Italcementi will be making in partnership with the Libyan Fund for Economic and Social Development, to build a new cement plant near Tobruk.
“In terms of size and location, the plant is a major investment and will be built using cutting-edge technology to optimize production and environmental efficiency. Assisted by the new climate of constructive cooperation between Italy and Libya, we hope to bring the permitting process for the new facility and related infrastructure to a rapid close, and move on to the construction stage.”

The new cement plant, with an annual capacity of approximately 4 million metric tons, and related infrastructure will require an overall investment of between 550 and 750 million dollars.
Replying to Minister Ali Zikri, who stressed the importance of the project and the Italian investments especially in view of the pact signed by the two countries’ governments on August 30, the Italian Ambassador to Libya, Francesco Trupiano, underlined “the value, over and beyond the symbolic level, of a meeting that marks the first contract drawn up since the Friendship Treaty was signed.”
