| Atlántica de Graneles y Moliendas in the port of Bilbao | Atlántica de Graneles y Moliendas has been dedicated to the treatment of Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag since 1949. Since 1969 the company has been owned by Cementos Lemona (taken over by Portland at the end of 2005) and Financiera y Minera.
As a result of significant technological development and investment (€ 30.5 million), Atlántica has built an integrated plant for the handling and treatment of cement products, principally the production of Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GBFS), which boasts state-of-the-art equipment unique in the Spanish cement sector. Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag is a by-product of iron-ore smelting, that can be used as raw material in cement manufacturing, thereby considerably reducing CO2 emissions and being pivotal to achieving the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol.
Atlántica’s facilities are spread over 55,000 m2 in the Port of Bilbao, and consist of mobile dedusted hoppers on the pier, belt transport to the Plant (carrying 1,000 tonnes of material per hour), a covered stockpile of 33,000 tonnes, a LOESCHE LM46 2+2s Vertical Roller Mill for slag and cement grinding (800,000 tonnes/year) and a GBFS and cement silo holding 24,000 tonnes. The project also includes distribution by truck, rail and ship. The transport and storage system started operation in January 2004 and has significantly contributed to Port activity by handling an innovative pattern of bulk treatment technologies. Its full operation is expected to be during 2007.
