Italcementi has undertaken a significant program of renovation and innovation at the Calusco d’Adda plant in Italy. The project combines environmental and industrial goals by adopting the best technologies available on the market.
Since Italcementi took over the plant in 1920, the cement facilities of Calusco d’Adda have been continuously updated both technically and environmentally.
As a result of this last project the plant has been almost completely redesigned, with an entirely new production line, from raw materials to clinker, built in accordance with the highest technological standards. The project places Calusco high on the list of the top cement plants in the world in terms of both state-of-the-art technology and enhanced environmental performance.

10 finishing mills |
4 mills closed 6 mills still in use |
The new plant has reduced energy and fuel demand, cut atmospheric emissions by 50 to 90% compared to the old plant performance (well below regulatory limit values) and abated noise impact due to a new lay-out. Dust and emissions to air are continuously monitored at the kiln stack with advanced analyzers for process control and to ensure compliance with environmental legislation.
At the end of 2004 a total investment of 164 million euro has been made in the new plant, including:
- building a 9 km tunnel with 800 m of vertical drop to connect the Col Pedrino quarry to the Monte Giglio quarry, close to the plant;
- installing two pre-homogenization storage facilities for limestone and marl at the Monte Giglio quarry;
- installing a new line with a clinker production capacity of 3600 ton/day, including a raw mill, storage silos, coal mill, and a dry process kiln.
